Newcastle should land Lingard for 'the right price' after 'huge' Man United update reported - pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard would be a “huge signing” for Newcastle United.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Magpies should capitalise on players with expiring contracts to lure them to St James’ Park.
As reported by the Mirror on Sunday (October 10th), Newcastle are set to launch January moves for Man United stars Lingard, 28, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek and Eric Bailly in an attempt to secure their Premier League status.
The 28-year-old England international is yet to start in the Premier League this season, despite scoring twice in 45 minutes of action.
Lingard has enjoyed a return to the Three Lions set-up, joining Gareth Southgate’s squad for internationals in September and October.
Whelan insisted Lingard is the “right age” for Newcastle and believes a relatively low fee will prise him away from Old Trafford with his contract expiring next summer.

“That [Lingard] would be a huge signing,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“They should be adding that sort of quality to their team, and be capitalising on players coming out of contract to get them at a bargain price.
“Man United won’t want to lose Lingard for nothing. Any money coming in for them will be used for a player.
“We saw what he could do at West Ham last season.
“We’re seeing it now with his revived England career and the games he’s come on for United – bar one.
“He’s the right age, and they should get him for a good price.
“He’s a player who can come in and improve anyone’s side.”
Lingard spent the second half of last term on loan at West Ham.
He scored nine in 16 games to help the Hammers to Europa League qualification.
