Newcastle United are advancing in talks with Juventus to add the marquee signing of Daniele Rugani to the imminent arrival of Rodrigo Vilca, Football Insider understands.

The north-east giants have agreed the terms of a £250,000 deal for Vilca, 21, with Peruvian club Deportivo Municipal and that is expected to be confirmed by the end of the week.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that the club are also working on a deal to land Rugani, 26, by Monday night’s deadline.

Manager Steve Bruce wants a new senior centre-back to strengthen his back line.

Moves for Arsenal’s Rob Holding and Norwich City’s Ben Godfrey have both collapsed and Newcastle are now hoping to exploit Rugani’s demotion at Juve.

Talks are centring on a potential loan-to-buy deal in which the move could become permanent at the end of the season.

Seven-times Italy international Rugani has spent his entire senior career at Juventus although he has had loan spells back at boyhood club Empoli.

But he has slipped down the pecking order under Andrea Pirlo and has not made the matchday squad for any of the Serie A champions’ matches this season.

That has opened the door for Newcastle, who have a number of senior defenders like Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schar and Paul Dummett working their way back from long-term injuries.

Newcastle tried to lure Holding from Arsenal on loan but he has been a regular under Mikel Arteta in the new season.

They also turned their attention to Godfrey, but Everton have had a bid accepted by Norwich City and are holding talks in London today with his agents over personal terms.
