Newcastle source: Significant Callum Wilson update as new comeback date revealed
Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is confident of returning to action before the final five games of the season, Football Insider understands.
The 30-year-old has been on the sidelines since suffering a calf injury against Manchester United in December.
A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that Wilson is making good progress on his recovery and has targeted a possible return to first-team action for the Norwich City clash on 23 April.
The return of the forward would be a huge boost for Newcastle after being without him for three months.
Wilson scored six goals in his opening 15 games of the season.
He is still the Magpies’ top scorer despite missing the club’s last nine Premier League games.
Newcastle splashed out a reported £25million to sign Chris Wood from Burnley in January to help bolster their striking options.
The New Zealand international netted his first goal for the club against Southampton last week.
He had gone seven games without scoring or assisting, although Newcastle remained unbeaten with him in the side.
Speaking at his press conference last week (9 March), Eddie Howe confirmed he hoped to have Wilson back for the “final few games” of the campaign.
The former Bournemouth striker has undergone specialist treatment on the injury, both in London and in Dubai.
Newcastle are set to face Everton, Tottenham, Wolves and Leicester City before Wilson’s prospective return.
Meanwhile, the Magpies are still awaiting a rearranged date for their home tie against Crystal Palace.
The Magpies will play Norwich, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Burnley in their final five fixtures.
