Newcastle star man set to be fit for Man City clash after ‘assessment’

Newcastle are due to have one of their key players fit to play after the international break after an injury last time out caused some concerns around his availability.

Newcastle were beaten 3-1 by Brentford last Sunday (9 November) as they slipped to 14th in the Premier League and a third successive away defeat.

The international break could not have come at a better time for Eddie Howe and his players, with a number of players out injured and nearing a return to action soon.

Yoane Wissa has not played for Newcastle since his arrival from Brentford, while Anthony Gordon had to be withdrawn last week against Athletic Club with hip pain and missed the trip to West London.

Another key player suffered an injury in their defeat to the Bees, but looks set to be fit and ready for their huge game against Man City next week.

Joelinton set to be fit to face Man City after injury concern

Joelinton went down injured early on against Brentford before he was eventually forced off and replaced by Jacob Ramsey after just 24 minutes.

Following the game, Howe admitted that the substitution had set the Magpies back, but he was unsure about the extent of his damage, saying: “Joelinton, I’m not sure, it looked like a knock, but it was obviously enough for him to go off.

I haven’t had a full discussion or debrief from the medical team on him. He was a big miss today.”

A new report from Chronicle Live states that, after assessment from the club’s medical staff, Joelinton has got away with just a cut following a knee-high challenge from Bees forward Dango Ouattara.

Images showed a nasty cut to the Brazilian midfielder’s leg, and there was concern that there may have been further damage that would rule him out for an extended period of time.

Despite those worries, their sources say that Joelinton has been assessed and will continue to be monitored with the hope that he will be ready to face Man City on 22 November.

Joelinton could be replaced in January but isn’t set to leave Newcastle

Joelinton has continued to be a key man for Howe this season with three goals in 15 appearances so far, but Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali have been more impressive in the middle of the park.

Football Insider revealed on 8 November that Newcastle are not planning to sell Joelinton in the new year as he is a crucial part of their midfield plans.

The Brazilian’s form has been a “concern” for those on Tyneside, however, and Football Insider revealed on 10 November that Newcastle could sign a Joelinton replacement in January as they assess long-term replacements.

Newcastle are eyeing a move for Kobbie Mainoo as he aims to leave Man United soon, so he could be the man to replace Joelinton as he edges closer to 30-years-old.
