Newcastle star will be fuming PIF blocked him from moving in the summer after latest

Newcastle have a player among their ranks who will surely be angry right now after he failed to seal a move away in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle saw off Tottenham at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening with a 2-0 win to go through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Eddie Howe fielded a strong side as they aim to defend their crown following last season’s triumph, and the hosts’ quality and home advantage shone through as Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade grabbed a goal in each half.

Howe has stuck by Woltemade since his big-money move from Stuttgart, and the results have been impressive with six goals in his first 11 appearances for the club.

Fellow summer signing Yoane Wissa has been dealing with injury concerns since joining from Brentford, but he is soon to come into the fold, and another of the Magpies’ forwards must be pretty unhappy with how this season is turning out for him right now.

Will Osula summer’s exit was blocked by PIF and now he is struggling for Newcastle minutes

Will Osula led the line for Newcastle in the early stages of the season while Woltemade bedded in, and he proved his quality in front of goal with a strike against Liverpool and a brace against Bradford City in the Carabao Cup last month.

He had been linked with a move away from Tyneside all summer, but the Alexander Isak saga and their struggle to get a new centre-forward in meant Newcastle kept hold of the 22-year-old past the deadline.

Reports emerged following the end of the window that PIF pulled the plug on letting Osula leave very close to the deadline after a permanent transfer of around £30million had reportedly been agreed with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Frankfurt had wanted to change the make-up of the deal late on and instead negotiated a £6m loan with an option to buy, yet Newcastle kept hold of Osula and there was believed to be a feeling of “huge relief” on Tyneside that the 22-year-old remained at the club.

Despite a strong start to the campaign, Woltemade’s emergence at the Magpies has seen the young Dane reduced to a bit-part role in Howe’s squad over the last six weeks.

Osula has not started a game since his brace against Bradford, and has instead come on as a substitute in each of their last seven games in all competitions.

Howe gave him a combined 14 minutes in their four games prior to Wednesday’s cup clash, and Osula will have fancied his chances of a start against Tottenham considering his starring role in their third round win.

He was instead resigned to another bench role, and while he was given 19 minutes at the end to prove his worth, the game was already done and dusted as he failed to register a shot on goal.

Osula will surely be angry with PIF for blocking his summer move, as there seems to be little pathway to a regular first-team spot under Howe if he cannot even get sufficient game-time in cup competitions.

It’s not as if he is a real budding youngster either, with Woltemade just a year his senior at 23, while Wissa’s upcoming return to action is set to plunge him even further down the pecking order for minutes up-front.

Osula could leave Newcastle in January

Osula could well leave St James’ Park in the January window as a result of his lack of game-time, even though Howe recently described him as “vitally important” to their potential success this season.

Sources recently told Football Insider that Frankfurt are eager to reignite a loan deal for Osula in January after their summer move fell through.

Football Insider have also revealed that Newcastle will consider letting Osula leave in the new year if Woltemade and Wissa are each fit and firing, so a move away certainly seems possible.

Newcastle are believed to be eyeing a January move for Igor Thiago after his strong start to the 2025-26 campaign at Brentford, and if that move, or any for a new striker was to materialise, then Osula’s exit would surely be a formality as he aims to further his career with constant game-time.
