Newcastle United have stepped up their bid to sign Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, according to a report.
The Sun claim that the north-east giants have been given considerable hope in their pursuit as Wilshere is resigned to ending his lengthy stay at Emirates Stadium.
It is said that the England international is at odds with Gunners manager Arsene Wenger over his fitness and capability to play first-team football.
The Sun report that Wilshere’s stance is he is totally fit and completely recovered from the fractured leg he sustained in April while on loan at Bournemouth.
However, Wenger has publicly said that the injury-ravaged Arsenal academy product is not yet able to play for the senior side.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has reportedly told the club to “pull out all the stops” to sign Wilshere before the transfer window shuts this month.
The Spaniard has made it clear that he is unhappy at the Magpies’ transfer activity, which has seen them signing four senior players on permanent deals and one on loan following their promotion to the Premier League.
Playmaker Wilshere has 34 England caps and has an impressive track record in the English top fight despite the injuries that have been a regular feature of his career.
The 25-year-old is out of contract at his boyhood club at the end of the season.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club have agreed the terms of a defender transfer as their whirlwind of activity continues.
