Florian Lejeune – 6
One area which had been targeted as a priority for Benitez was his defence, which is why he had targeted Eibar centre back Florian Lejeune as a top target.
While the Spanish boss finally got his man, transfer proceedings were slow and tedious, leaving Newcastle fans concerned about whether they would get the deal over the line.
With the deal done, Lejeune went straight into the starting XI for the season opener against Tottenham, keeping club captain Jamaal Lascelles out, and he performed confidently for the opening half an hour.
Unfortunately for the French defender, his competitive debut ended early thanks to a reckless Harry Kane scissor tackle (pictured above), which saw the summer signing ruled out for a couple of weeks.
Since then the form of Lascelles and defensive partner Ciaran Clark have meant the former Eibar man will have to wait for his chance to return to the first team fold.
