Mikel Merino – 9
What a find this young midfielder has been.
His arrival on loan from Borussia Dortmund was completely out of the blue, but there is no doubt that the 21-year-old has a bright future ahead of him.
Already a fans’ favourite at St James’ Park, his chance in the starting XI came following Jonjo Shelvey’s sending off in the season opener, and the English midfielder has failed to find a way back thanks to Merino’s displays.
Confident in the middle of the park, the Spanish under-21 star has a good blend of physical and technical attributes which set him up well for life in the Premier League.
His impressive passing, work ethic and all round ability have quickly endeared him to the Geordie faithful, who will hope to see him remain at St James’ Park for years to come.
