Newcastle take huge step towards ‘£100m’ windfall – Stefan Borson

Newcastle United’s Champions League ambitions were boosted on Sunday (23 February) with their thrilling 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest.

The Magpies now sit fifth in the Premier League table – which looks likely to be enough to qualify for Europe’s elite competition in the 2025-26 campaign.

Eddie Howe‘s side have struggled to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in recent years and were forced to sell Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson last summer (2024) to balance the books.

Newcastle last qualified to the Champions League in the 2023-24 campaign but were eliminated at the group stage.

Newcastle transfer plans ‘completely dependent’ on Champions League

Football Insider revealed last month that Newcastle are expected to report club-record revenue beyond £300million for the 2023-24 season – boosted by their participation in Europe.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider that Champions League qualification will be worth at least “£50-60million” next season, with a potential to earn “£100million” with a strong showing.

He insisted qualification will make a “huge difference to profitability” at St James’ Park.

Borson told Football Insider: “In terms of meaningful development of the squad at Newcastle, it’s completely dependent on qualifying for the Champions League.

“Especially with that qualification potentially being worth in excess of £100million, if you make it to the quarter-finals.

“If you have a decent stint in the league phase, it’s around £2million per win – plus the fees for TV money, etc.

“City had a very poor league phase but still qualified for the knockout playoff, they probably got something like £60million.

“That’s pretty much the base of what you’re going to get, around the £50-60million mark – plus another £50million-plus of upside if you can go further.

“That would make a huge difference to profitability, especially to a club like Newcastle.

“It could mean a 20-30% increase in revenue for the season.

“It’s big upside if they can qualify, but I don’t think it’s a disaster if they don’t.”

Semenyo deal is ‘top priority for Newcastle’

Football Insider has been told by recruitment expert Mick Brown (20 February) that Newcastle are eyeing Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo as one of their primary targets ahead of the summer.

Newcastle are prioritising the signing of a right-winger in the off-season despite Jacob Murphy’s performances.

Semenyo has notched nine goals and five assists in 28 games across all competitions for high-flying Bournemouth this term.
