‘Newcastle takeover spells danger for Rangers’ – Huge BBC update, pundit reacts

The imminent Newcastle United takeover spells danger for Rangers as the influx of cash could mean a concerted bid for Alfredo Morelos, Football Insider can reveal.

BBC Sport report that owner Mike Ashley has entered into a charge agreement with potential buyer Amanda Staveley, who is leading a £300million bid which involves Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund and the Reuben Brothers.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that the club will have the cash and ambition to invest in top playing talent in the next transfer window as they look to recruit at least one stellar striker and possibly two or three.

Scotland’s top two forwards Morelos and Odsonne Edouard have both been on the Premier League club’s radar in recent months.

Morelos was a £25million target for the likes of Inter Milan and Tottenham in January, as well as leading French and Spanish clubs.

The cash crisis brought by the coronavirus pandemic makes Rangers even more vulnerable to losing their prize asset.

Newcastle are well placed to exploit their new status as a cash-rich club if, as seems almost certain, the takeover is finalised shortly.

The club have operated well within financial fair play guidelines and could spend well over £100m without flouting the rules.

“Newcastle will definitely need at least two top centre-forwards this summer, and probably three if they sell Joelinton and Dwight Gayle,” ex-Leeds United and SPL striker Noel Whelan told Football Insider.

“You can see them looking at Edouard and Morelos, and other potentially available strikers. It depends on how much money they have to spend. They could look at an even higher bracket of striker.

“But the Newcastle takeover definitely spells danger for Rangers.”
