Newcastle tipped to complete Digne signing after journalist’s update – pundit
Alan Hutton has tipped Newcastle United to win the race to sign Everton defender Lucas Digne this month.
The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Magpies could blow rivals away with the lure of the project under the new ownership.
As reported by the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards on Tuesday (4 January), Newcastle are plotting a move for Digne, 28, after his fallout with Rafael Benitez.
The Magpies are reportedly hopeful a deal can be done quickly as they target six new signings this month.
A Newcastle source has told Football Insider today they are now working on multiple other signings and one of them is Digne.
Hutton believes Newcastle would be the biggest lure for the left-back.
Asked where he expects Digne to go this month, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Well, you look at the likes of Newcastle.
“They’re going to sign Kieran Trippier. We’ve discussed how defensively they’ve really struggled.
“If they could get someone of Digne’s quality to add to the mix, we’re talking about a team at Newcastle who can turn the corner. It’s looking good if they can keep everyone fit.
“Wilson, I know he’s out at the moment, Saint-Maximin. These kinds of guys, along with a strong back four, you’re thinking: ‘Right, okay. They can get out of the mess that they’re in.’
“It all comes down to what the future plans are. To be involved in something like Newcastle moving forward, it’s a great prospect for a footballer.

“That might be enough to get it over the line.”
As reported by Football Insider today (5 January), Kieran Trippier is jetting in to become the first signing under the new owners.
