Newcastle tipped to sign Phillips after Liverpool source update

Noel Whelan has suggested either Newcastle United or West Ham could sign Nat Phillips after Liverpool gave a loan move the green light.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted a temporary deal for the 24-year-old would suit the Irons or the Magpies this month.

A Liverpool source told Football Insider on Tuesday (11 January) the Reds have told Phillips he can leave on loan later this month if they cannot agree a permanent deal.

As revealed by this site last week (7 January), the Merseyside giants rejected a £7million from Watford.

The Reds are holding out for a fee of £12million.

However, Whelan suggested Newcastle and West Ham would much rather a loan deal.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “With Konate playing for Liverpool, he’s brought that little bit of extra quality to the side.

“They have strength and depth in that position. Nat Phillips had that taste of the Premier League last year when they had so many injuries.

“Maybe he now feels that he needs a little bit more first-team football. Sometimes under-23s’ football and being in the shadow of the first team is not enough when you’ve tasted it.

“He’s shown how good he is as a player, he needs to be playing football. He needs to be at a club that’s going to use him a lot more than Liverpool

“There are players ahead of him right now in that position with Joe Gomez coming back. It looks like he needs to move on to get that experience and progress in his career.

“There’s no doubt that Newcastle need another centre half. West Ham are looking for cover as well. They’re no-brainers and could both sign him.

“They play the right kind of football which he’s used to at Liverpool, coming through the ranks. Good football from back to front.

“Those sort of teams, I would say, are very much in need of a Nat Phillips. A loan deal would suit both of them very much right now.”

Phillips has played just three times for Liverpool this season.

He has a total of 24 appearances under his belt for the Reds.
