Newcastle to agree double deal in new Dan Ashworth twist – sources

Newcastle United are likely to fast-track Dan Ashworth’s move to Man United once they have secured a replacement, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies confirmed in February that Ashworth, 53, had been placed on gardening leave after accepting a sporting director role at Old Trafford.

But the two clubs have been embroiled in a row over compensation ever since and it has been widely reported that Newcastle are demanding up to £20million.

It is believed that the Tyneside club will back down in negotiations once they have secured a new technical director.

Recent reports have claimed Crystal Palace transfer chief Dougie Freedman is part of the final shortlist at St James’ Park.

Newcastle could allow Ashworth exit after replacement is secured

Football Insider revealed on Monday (29 April) that Man United are still planning to have Ashworth in place for the summer transfer window.

He is under contract at Newcastle until June 2026 and it is believed the Magpies are unwilling to let him join a rival for a knockdown compensation fee.

Ashworth will lead recruitment upon his arrival at Old Trafford, with Jason Wilcox – who has already joined the club from Southampton – working under him.

Man United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe

It is believed Man United will be active in the transfer market in the off-season following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority takeover earlier this year.

Newcastle sit seventh in the Premier League, one point and one place under Erik ten Hag’s side.
