‘Newcastle to approve another spectacular expansion after stadium is done’
Newcastle United are expected to build a new stadium adjacent to St James’ Park in the near future to mark the next stage of their evolution as a club.
The Magpies’ current home is no longer seen as fit for purpose in terms of capacity or facilities and Saudi chiefs are keen to kickstart growth with a move away.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have also announced their plans to expand the current training ground – despite being in the process of planning a move away from Darsley Park.
They will undertake 1,350 square metres of development, due for completion next summer, in work that will cost £20million.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has revealed what he has heard about Newcastle’s potential new training base.
Newcastle could expand into basketball when new training base is built, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted he has heard “absolutely spectacular” details about the new base – and claimed the Magpies will look at expanding into other sports.
It has been widely reported in recent weeks that the NBA are considering partnering with FIBA in a potential expansion into European basketball.
Wyness insisted Newcastle “will be right up there” if those plans extend to English shores.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “They’re certainly going to build a new facility.
“I think they are redeveloping the current training ground and adding things as they plan a move to a new one, which is incredible investment.
“This underlines how they are trying to cater to the top-level players.
“They’re making sure they can have world-class environments to keep them happy in the Newcastle area.
“The new facility is going to be absolutely spectacular, from all I’ve heard about the location.
“There are rumours about new franchises in Newcastle including things like the NBA, who are looking at setting up a new Euro League.
“They’re looking at some of the football clubs who could house franchises – and I’d think that Newcastle would be right up there.
“There’s some big plays happening right now, and it wouldn’t surprise me if PIF were looking at that.
“You’ll bring more and more top-quality athletes into the area, and that helps. They thrive off each other being there.”
