Newcastle to face Tottenham issue after ‘massive’ reveal – Stefan Borson
Newcastle United could face issues around where they will play if they need to leave St James’ Park while they redevelop the stadium.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the north-east giants could have to leave the stadium temporarily after Tottenham were forced to play at Wembley while they completed a similar project.
Plans for leaving St James’ Park, which has been the club’s home since 1892, were discussed by the Newcastle United Fan Advisory Board on 30 September.
The Tyneside club’s chief operating officer Brad Miller said they need to “understand alternative options” as part of the stadium feasibility process.
The study has entered its second phase, with more detailed analysis taking place to investigate project-related risks and opportunities before a decision stage begins in early 2025.
The Telegraph reported on 6 October Newcastle are considering a complete rebuild of St James’ Park, rather than just an expansion, as part of a “massive redevelopment” of the area surrounding the stadium.
Newcastle progress could be limited by temporary stadium switch
Borson suggested issues around where Eddie Howe’s side will play while the project is ongoing could limit the progress they are able to make.
“From what I’ve seen, I think the plan would be to be like a Spurs style situation,” Borson told Football Insider.
“They have got a plot of land that is next to the stadium, so you do three sides of the build on one side of the stadium while the stadium is still active, and then you flip round.
“But as we know, Spurs still had one year where they didn’t have anywhere to play.
“It’s hard to see what the solution would be for Newcastle.

“It’s something that will limit their progress on this I think.
“It’s very hard to know what the answer would be on that.”
