Newcastle told to agree ‘big’ sponsor deal, it could help them sign £60m star

Newcastle United passed up on the opportunity to strengthen Eddie Howe’s side in the January transfer window.

After struggling for form in recent weeks, Newcastle secured a 2-1 victory over Tottenham on Tuesday (10 February), moving them up to 10th in the Premier League table.

Meanwhile, the Magpies are set to take on Qarabag in a knock-out round play-off tie for a place in the last 16 of the Champions League this month.

Despite having plenty still to play for, Howe’s side decided against making new additions for the second mid-season window in a row.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 4 February, chief executive David Hopkinson revealed Newcastle could have signed players in January, but he insisted they didn’t find the right opportunity.

How Newcastle will approach summer transfer window

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Newcastle will be looking to sign players for between £50-60million in the summer transfer window.

However, that doesn’t help them in the short term as they continue to compete on multiple fronts this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Newcastle failing to strengthen in January, Borson said: “I mean, there are loads of injuries. The squad’s always too small anyway for such a heavy burden.

“I don’t really understand it, but I would expect them to do what they’ve tried to do each summer, which is find players in that kind of £50-60m zone that they think are worth £80-90m and help the squad.”

Newcastle spent around £240m on new signings last summer, but Alexander Isak’s £125m move to Liverpool helped balance the books at St James’ Park.

How sponsor deal could boost Newcastle’s spending power

Borson insisted Newcastle need to agree “big” sponsorship deals if they want to increase their spending and compete with the top clubs on a consistent basis.

“I think it’s going to be very difficult unless they can sort the stadium out, get a training ground sponsor, get a big stadium sponsor, all of these things,” said Borson.

“They’re another team that needs a wage bill higher than they have. That needs to be closer to City, Liverpool and Arsenal.”

Deloitte’s 2026 Money League has revealed Newcastle’s wage bill stood at £238m last season.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s wage bill surged to £421m as they lifted the Premier League title, with Man City spending £408m and Arsenal’s total reaching £338m.
