Newcastle told to appoint 'perfect' Hodgson after Saudi plan revealed by Jim White - pundit

Newcastle United “have to try and convince” Roy Hodgson to succeed Steve Bruce at St. James’ Park.

That is the view of former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the vacant position on Tyneside.

The Magpies confirmed Steve Bruce had left the club by mutual consent on Wednesday.

Jim White told talkSPORT (October 21st) Bruce’s replacement will only be appointed on a temporary basis.

The new owners want an English manager with Premier League experience to help Newcastle beat the drop.

The likes of Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have been linked in recent days.

Phillips is adamant Hodgson, 74, who left Crystal Palace in June, is the answer.

“For me, the best name up for discussion is Roy Hodgson,” he told Football Insider.

“They have to try and convince him. He’s got such great experience. He’s been there, seen it, done it.

“For me, that stinks of a no-brainer. If you are looking for someone who can keep you up. You look no further.

“Just look at the job he did at Palace. He has left them in a healthy position.

“For a temporary role until the end of the season, I think he’d be perfect. I’m pretty sure he’d be tempted as well.

“The other English names in the hat are good managers but I’d have reservations. Hodgson would be a great fit.”
