Newcastle told to grab Botman 'with both hands' after 'massive' Sky update - coach

Newcastle United should go all out to sign Sven Botman from Lille this month, according to Kevin Phillips.

The ex-Leicester City and Derby County coach, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the left-footed 21-year-old would bring much-needed balance to the Magpies’ backline.

According to Sky Sports (8 January), Lille are considering a £29.3million bid from Newcastle for Botman.

However, the bid is no expected to be successful with the Ligue 1 champions valuing their centre-half at £35million.

Botman’s contract in France runs until the summer of 2025.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Botman’s credentials, Phillips said: “As a coach, you want the balance right in a back four.

“If you can get a good left-footed centre-half, grab him with both hands. There are not many left-footed centre-halves around, in the Premier League or the world for that matter.

“If you can get one if gives the team good balance. That left-footed centre-half will be much better at coming out with the ball on that side. It is a massive bonus.

“First and foremost, they need to be good defensively but Botman ticks that box as well. He would give Newcastle balance which I’m sure Eddie Howe would like.”

Botman has made 17 appearances across all competitions for Lille this season, including three starts in the Champions League.

He has also been heavily linked with a move Serie A giants AC Milan.
