Newcastle told to pull the plug on new stadium

Newcastle would be better off staying at St James’ Park rather than building a new stadium elsewhere after plans were revealed.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Scotland international striker Frank McAvennie believes St James’ Park is ‘the soul of Newcastle’ and fans would be outraged if the owners decided to up-sticks and move elsewhere.

The Saudi-backed club are reportedly looking to build a new £1billion 70,000 seater stadium as part of their plans to modernise the club and make it a Premier League powerhouse.

As uncertainty looms, manager Eddie Howe came out on Friday, ahead of their 0-0 draw with Everton, and said it would be a ‘betrayal‘ if Newcastle ever left St James’ Park.

Newcastle owners urged to reconsider St James’ Park decision

Sitting in the heart of the city centre with a capacity of 52,000, St James’ Park has seen many highs and lows over the years.

Right now they’re going through a high, sitting in seventh with three wins, three draws, and one defeat from their opening seven Premier League games.

“They cannot build a new stadium, they’ve got to have it at St James’ Park”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“I lived there for 15 years, every way you come into Newcastle you see the stadium, it’s night in the heart of Newcastle, it’s life, it’s the soul of Newcastle.

“You see grown men walking about with Newcastle strips on, no game, just walking about with their strips on.

“It’s incredible how they do it, they’ve got a huge, magnificent support so if it was me I’d say no.

“You don’t want to move out to somewhere else, you want to have it all at St James’ Park.

“It’s as if it’s on a hill, everywhere you go you can see it, it’s like a shrine.

“It’s somewhere people love to play, they’re a bit in awe of it when they get to St James’ Park, it’s incredible.

“I would suggest staying there and I know a lot of supporters who agree with me.”
