Newcastle told to seal January move for 'keen' Trippier after transfer update - pundit
Newcastle would be getting a “quality international player” if they seal a deal for Kieran Trippier in January, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 31-year-old’s “experience” could be key to the Magpies’ survival this term.
As reported by AS (November 8th), Trippier is keen on resurrecting a move to Man United – who were interested in a move in summer – despite fresh interest from Newcastle ahead of the winter window.
The 35-time England international made 35 appearances for Atletico Madrid last season as the Spanish club claimed the league title.
Trippier is out of contract at the Wanda Metropolitano in 2023. The full-back is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Whelan insisted there is a “deal to be done” for Trippier in the winter window.

“They need players through the door, and Trippier is one who is coming out of contract,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“I’m sure there’s a deal to be done by Newcastle for him in January with a little bit of money going Atletico’s way.
“They would be getting a quality international player in their ranks with experience – which will be key with the situation they’re currently in.
“They will be looking for these sorts of players who are available for small fees but have huge experience and get a good two to three years out of them.
“It will be interesting to see how they tackle the January window. I think they’ll be targeting players who can’t force their way into their current Premier League sides, maybe on a loan-to-buy arrangement.
“They need new faces through the door in order to stay in the Premier League.”
