Newcastle United are plotting ‘spectacular’ signing spree – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has backed Newcastle United to “make a big challenge” in the 2025-26 campaign when new spending rules come into force.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Magpies could be one of “10 clubs” challenging for Champions League football when the changes happen.
On Monday (29 April), Premier League clubs voted in favour of developing plans to introduce a spending cap.
16 clubs, including Newcastle, backed the plans with only Aston Villa, Man City and Man United voting against and Chelsea abstaining.
It is believed the spending cap will limit outlay on transfers, wages and agents’ fees and will be anchored to the amount the lowest-earning Premier League club receives in TV revenue.
Widespread reports have suggested the cap could land at around £500million with the lowest-earning club currently receiving £103.6million.

Currently, clubs are only allowed to lose £105million over three seasons – a rule Newcastle have struggled to comply with since their Saudi-backed takeover.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “These new rules are coming in for the 2025-26 season, so it may not be this summer.
“But certainly next year, Newcastle will be able to strengthen.
“They’ve got the basis of a very strong side. I don’t expect too many big signings in 2024.
“However, in 2025 – that’s when we’ll see it.
“They’ll be hoping to push on next season and get ready to possibly make a big challenge in 2025-26.
“I think it will be a great season. Owners will be able to invest more, which I’ve always asked for.

“It could be spectacular, the players coming in. 10 clubs could challenge for the top four places.
“I think Newcastle and Aston Villa will definitely be one of those sides up there when these changes come in.”
