Newcastle United backed to beat Tottenham to Memphis Depay signing after latest – pundit

Alan Hutton has backed Newcastle United to beat Tottenham to the signing of Memphis Depay after our source’s update on Tuesday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs right-back said Newcastle need to starting adding “quality” if their side want to reach the next level.

According to Spanish outlet AS, as relayed by the Express (27 December), Eddie Howe’s side are looking at a cut-price January deal for the 28-year-old and offer him a way out of Barcelona.

The forward’s contract at the Nou Camp expires in the summer but the La Liga giants are believed to be happy to cash in on the Netherlands international in the new year.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider on Tuesday that Spurs have an interest in Depay but he is not a top priority for them.

When asked if Newcastle could beat Tottenham to the striker’s signature, Hutton told Football Insider:Probably at this moment in time.

You watch their games and the way they play, it is really exciting football. They are full of confidence, they are going places and taking steps in the right direction.

Building it slowly and not just jumping in with two feet and trying to spend loads of money.

You can see that they are all playing together. There is going to come a time where they are going to have to add quality to try and really compete.

Depay kind of frustrates me because he is full of ability, it has not quite worked for him. Is he going to fit in to the way that they play? They are very high energy and I do not know if that suits him.
