Newcastle United backed to complete Goncalo Ramos signing as pundit ‘wowed’ by £84.6m update

Newcastle United are targeting the right kind of player amid reports they are about to bid for Goncalo Ramos.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ hunt for a striker.

On Friday (12 August), The Northern Echo reported Newcastle are set to press forward with a £25.3million move for Benfica star Ramos.

It is claimed the 21-year-old has an £84.6million (€100million) release clause in the contract he signed in October.

Ramos scored against Newcastle in a pre-season friendly last month as Benfica won 3-2 at the Estadio da Luz.

Kenny claims he is exactly the type of striker Newcastle should be looking to sign as cover for Callum Wilson.

“€100million, wow. It’s all about potential with Newcastle,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“They had a great start and we know they are gradually going to improve this squad over the next couple of windows.

“Yet again, it’s someone with potential. Until you stick him in the Premier League we don’t know, do we?

“It’s that guessing game. If he can come in and learn from Callum Wilson, that is a good thing. I like the way Newcastle are going.

“I’m excited to see how they do this season and who else comes in.”

Ramos scored eight goals in 46 appearances for the Portuguese side during the 2021-22 season.

This includes a strike in his side’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League.
