Newcastle United backed to complete Memphis Depay signing after £17m update – pundit
Frank McAvennie has backed Newcastle United to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said players will be keen to be part of the progress at Newcastle.
According to Mundodeportivo (7 October), the Magpies are plotting a move for the 28-year-old in January.
The Toon attempted to sign the striker in the summer but he decided to stay at the Nou Camp.
Barca have made it known that the Netherlands international is for sale and valued him at £17million in the summer.
Eddie Howe’s side will be hoping that price could drop in January when Depay will have six months left on his Barcelona contract.
McAvennie insisted Depay would be a good fit for the northern club.
“I think they are always going to be looking for a good striker,” he told Football Insider.

“In the next couple of months there are going to be so many rumours going about and Newcastle are the one everyone will be talking about because they have got the money.
“I can see anyone going to Newcastle because they can see the progress. It is a project that people would want to get involved in. And the money will be different class, that always helps. I can see Depay at Newcastle. Every player they bring in has got to add something and Depay would certainly add.“
