Newcastle United backed to pull off ‘incredible’ Marco Asensio signing after update – pundit

Newcastle United could win the race to sign Real Madrid star Marco Asensio.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ hunt for a new attacker.

Asensio’s future is up in the air as he prepares to enter the final 12 months of his contract at the Bernabeu.

AS reported on 7 July that Newcastle are pushing to sign the 26-year-old attacker with Los Blancos open to selling him this summer.

Newcastle are looking to bolster their attacking options after improving their defence with the signings of Matt Targett, Nick Pope and Sven Botman.

Kenny claims Asensio’s lack of Premier League experience should not be a concern.

“If they are going for a winger, he’s an option,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He has played a lot of games for Real Madrid and he has loads of experience as well. He is also a Spanish international.

“If Newcastle could get a name like that in from Real Madrid, it just shows their intent again. It would be an incredible signing.

“I think it would be a good signing, he is a great age. I know he hasn’t got Premier League experience but some of the other players they bought didn’t have that experience.

“You just have to hope your scouting system is right and he is good enough for the Premier League.”

Asensio made 42 appearances for Real Madrid in all competitions during the 2021-22 season.

He scored 12 goals and registered two assists as his side won La Liga and the Champions League.
