Newcastle United backed to seal deal for James Maddison alternative after source’s update – pundit

Kevin Campbell has backed Newcastle United to move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher before the transfer window closes.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal striker said the 22-year-old would be “a very good signing” for the Magpies even though he is not as creative as James Maddison.

Sources told this site (4 August) that the Leicester City have told Newcastle Maddison is not for sale in this window.

The Magpies have had two bids for the attacking midfielder rejected by the Foxes.

Maddison has two years remaining on his contract at the King Power Stadium.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs who Eddie Howe’s side could consider instead of the one-time England international, Campbell said: “Gallagher would be a very good signing.

“He has a great engine.

“I don’t think he is as creative as Maddison though. He doesn’t have that craft.

“Gallagher is more of an all-action player. He would give them a lot at the top end of the pitch though because he can get around. He gets through 90 minutes easily.

“I think he needs to add a bit more creativity to his game. He is young and is still learning. Maddison is more experience than him.

“I still think Gallagher would a good signing though. I could see that.”

Gallagher spent the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Crystal Palace.

His contract at Stamford Bridge runs until the end of June 2025.
