Newcastle United backed to sign ‘best left-back in the PL’ after Eddie Howe reveal – pundit

Frank McAvennie has backed Newcastle United to sign Kieran Tierney this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted Tierney is the “best left-back in the Premier League”.

The 25-year-old’s current contract at the Emirates runs until 2026 after joining from Celtic in 2019.

But the left-back has struggled for game time due to injury and the recent arrival of Oleksandr Zinechenko has limited his minutes even more.

On 14 March, Football Insider, revealed that Magpies boss Eddie Howe has told the club that Tierney is one of his top summer targets.

Howe views the Scotland international as a player that could slot straight into the starting XI and improve it.

The boss has presented Tierney to sporting director Dan Ashworth and requested he pull out all the stops to secure the £30million-rated left-back.

When asked if a deal for the defender this summer is likely, McAvennie told Football Insider: Of course.

Real Madrid were looking at Tierney. I think he is the best left-back in the Premier League, I think he is different class.

Arsenal are not playing him at left-back because they are playing Zinchenko instead but he is not as defensively-minded as Tierney.

Tierney is not bad at going forward but he is not getting involved in midfield like Zinchenko does and that is what the manager wants.

Going to Newcastle would be a great piece of business, I think he would definitely strengthen the defence. They have got the money to go and spend and get Tierney.
