Newcastle United could accept points deduction in stunning twist – Stefan Borson
Newcastle United could accept a points deduction next season in a shock twist in order to keep hold of their star players this summer.
That is the view of Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle will want Man City to win their challenge against the Premier League so they can avoid PSR punishment.
City are set to face the Premier League over the associated party transaction rules which were toughened following PiF’s takeover of Newcastle in 2021.
The regulations make it tougher for Newcastle to strike sponsorship and commercial deals with parties linked to their new ownership.
As a result, the Tyneside club are on the brink of breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules after posting a loss of £73.4million in 2022-23.
Borson explained that Newcastle are under pressure to sell before June 30 but could choose to take a points deduction and keep hold of their star players.
Newcastle United could be saved from PSR danger by Man City case
“When it comes to the associated party rules, they were clearly focused on Newcastle and preventing their emergence after the early success that they had,” Borson told Football Insider.
“City are running the case, so Newcastle don’t need to and there’s no question that they want City to overturn those rules because it will have a big impact on Newcastle’s ability to compete.
“We have the situation right now where Newcastle need to sell a player before 30th of June or they will fail this year’s PSR.

“They may take a view on that and say – actually, we’d rather keep the player and take the penalty.
“Clearly, if there wasn’t the associated party rules, it would be easier for Newcastle to navigate PSR.“
