Newcastle United could seal 'top-class' Sven Botman signing after £30m update via BBC - pundit

Lille defender Sven Botman would be a “top-class” signing for Newcastle United this summer, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 22-year-old would add much-needed competition at St. James’ Park.

According to the BBC (15 June), the Magpies are in talks to sign Botman from Lille.

The two clubs are set to agree a fee to the centre-half though, with Newcastle currently offering £30million.

The Ligue 1 club are holding out for a fee closer to £35million, with AC Milan also interested in the player.

Botman has three years remaining on his contract in France.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the potential arrival of Botman on Tyneside, Robinson said: “They already have [Dan] Burn, [Jamaal] Lascelles and [Fabian] Schar.

“Burn had an excellent season.

“There will be player moving on at Newcastle to make room for players like Botman.

Botman would give them more quality and competition for places. Someone like him would give Eddie Howe another top-class option at centre-half.

“When he wants to rotate his team or play a certain way he will have options next season. There are some really good players at Newcastle but they haven’t got strength in depth. Botman would give them that.”

Botman made 32 appearances across all competitions for Lille last season and scored three times.

He helped the club win the Ligue 1 title in the 2020-21 campaign.
