Newcastle United don’t need to ‘break the bank’ to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin after £40m+ update – pundit

Newcastle United would not be “breaking the bank” spending £40million to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton this summer, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the eight-figure fee is good value for a “proven Premier League scorer”.

As revealed by Football Insider last month (14 May), Newcastle have held initial talks with Calvert-Lewin’s representatives over a move to St James’ Park.

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards (30 May) claims Newcastle have been quoted £40million-plus for the 25-year-old and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

The Telegraph (27 March) report Newcastle are scouring foreign markets due to the inflated price tags on domestic talent.

However, Whelan insisted signing Calvert-Lewin for £40million could prove good business for the Magpies.

“Look, £40million for a proven Premier League scorer, it’s not really breaking the bank,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“I think you’re getting a really good striker. It’s just the fact that he’s been injured for most of the season.

“If he’d been playing the majority of the season – even if they have struggled, Everton – and he’s banged in 15 goals, then it’d be a bit more easy to part with £40million.

“There’s still a very, very good player there. He’s still very, very young. There’s still loads of time in his career.”

Calvert-Lewin netted five goals in 17 Premier League games during the 2021/22 campaign.

He suffered a broken toe that kept him out for much of the season.
