Kieran Maguire: Newcastle facing 'huge challenge' after Staveley e-mail warning to rivals

Newcastle United have “very smart” people working behind the scenes to overcome a plot to restrict their commercial growth.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about new related party sponsorship measures.

As relayed by The Times on Tuesday (14 December), the Premier League has agreed to a new set of rules to prevent inflated-value commercial deals.

All new sponsorships will first be run by the top-flight, who will use a third party to assess whether they correspond with market value.

Magpies chief Amanda Staveley is understood to have told the 18 assenting Premier League clubs via e-mail that they will launch a legal challenge.

Maguire claims that the new measures will be somewhat restrictive for Newcastle but not impossible to overcome.

“It is quite clearly a protectionist measure from the Premier League,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“The sneaky six want to preserve their cartel and do not want any competition for Champions League places. The other clubs seem to acquiesce.

“It will be a huge challenge but I don’t think it will be an insurmountable one for Newcastle.

“They have got very smart people working at the club, fighting their corner and working on their behalf.

Relegation-battling Newcastle are set to play league leaders Man City this afternoon (19 December).

City were the only other team besides Newcastle to vote against the Premier League’s new rules.
