Whelan blasts Newcastle fans after 'sick' Bruce reveal
Steve Bruce has done an “incredible” job at Newcastle United – the supporters need to have some perspective.
So says ex-Premier League forward Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the under-fire Magpies boss.
As quoted by BBC Sport on 16 September, the 60-year-old claimed his family think he is “sick” for persisting with the Newcastle job.
Those comments came ahead of last night’s (17 September) 1-1 draw with Leeds United at St. James’ Park.
Bruce was the object of many supporters’ frustration throughout the evening, as he has been for quite some time.
But Whelan claims he cannot understand the Toon Army’s objections to the former Sunderland boss.

“He has never been a quitter,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“He has been asked to come into a difficult circumstance. He has probably had it tougher than Rafa Benitez, with hardly any money to spend.
“They have still got injuries and it’s not an easy league. It’s really difficult when you have got a chairman and owner who doesn’t care about the club.
“I don’t think anyone who comes in would actually do any better. What do the Newcastle fans actually want right now?
“He’s a manager, not a magician. You can’t magic £60million worth of talent into your squad. The fans should be pointing their anger at Mike Ashley.
“Bruce has done an incredible job to keep them in the league. He has had to deal with the takeover that’s fallen through.
“On top of that, he has to deal with speculation about his job every week. There are worse nous people at that club than him.”
