Kieran Maguire: Newcastle well placed to 'easily outbid' rivals to complete Lingard signing

The sedate free agent market has handed Newcastle United a big boost in their bid to sign Jesse Lingard without being “ripped off”.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ ambitions in the January transfer window.

The Daily Mail’s Mike Keegan reported last Sunday (5 December) that the market for high-earning stars will be at its flattest in years next summer.

Lingard, 28 is out of contract at Man United at the end of June and has been linked with a move to Tyneside by the Times on 4 December among others.

The 32-times England international has been a bit-part player for the Red Devils this season and is yet to start a match in the league.

Maguire suggests that a more static market means the Newcastle will not have to pay over the odds to land the attacker.

“This could be very useful for Newcastle in January,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“There are a lot of clubs with excess baggage, players who are entering the last six months of their contract.

“A desperate Newcastle don’t want to be taken advantage of, as has happened historically.

“At the ultra-elite level, it’s still a sellers’ market. But it’s a buyers’ market at the level Newcastle are operating at.

“They can easily outbid other clubs in this mid-tier market for the likes of Lingard without being ripped off.”

Newcastle are struggling in the Premier League and know recruitment will be key if they are to beat the drop this season.

But the club are yet to appoint a new director of football to oversee new signings in January,
