Kieran Maguire: Lots of clubs ‘very angry’ with Newcastle as executive quits

The anger surrounding the Newcastle United takeover ultimately led to Garry Hoffman’s resignation as Premier League chairman.

So says finance expert Kieran Magiure, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Premier League confirmed the news on 17 November.

Hoffman had been in the job 18 months and oversaw the league’s recovery from the pandemic as well as two breakaway competition plots.

His regime also gave the green light to the Saudi-led £305million Newcastle takeover in early October after months of legal manoeuvring.

The controversial deal was vehemently opposed within the Premier League and Maguire claims it was a death knell for Hoffman’s reign.

“We’ve got to look at it from the perspective of the other clubs in the Premier League,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“There was no communication, no heads up. Everyone is acting in self-interest. This is why he was forced out. There are a lot of very angry clubs.

“The big six clubs were disappointed with the Newcastle verdict because they have got more competition for Champions League places.

“Everyone else is unhappy because there is less competition for relegation. There is a lot of dissatisfaction in the Premier League.

“Many clubs were disappointed with Hoffman because of Super League. There is even a perception that he was secretly in favour of it.

“That made a number of clubs very angry because the Super League was designed to concentrate power in the hands of a few select clubs.
