Newcastle United make decision on signing Callum Wilson replacement – sources

Newcastle United are reluctant to sign a big-money replacement for Callum Wilson in the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies forward, 32, is on the comeback trail after a serious chest injury which required surgery.

Despite his injury problems, Football Insider revealed on Monday (22 April) that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is keen to keep Wilson at the club.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Howe and his coaching staff believe the England international is still one of the best strikers in the Premier League on his day.

Newcastle are light in the striker area but they are reluctant to add to their attacking arsenal amid ongoing Financial Fair Play concerns.

Newcastle reluctant to spend big on Wilson upgrade this summer

Sources say the club are conscious Wilson will not be cheap or easy to replace in the current market – with several top-flight sides keen to add new forwards in the off-season.

Alexander Isak has stepped up in Wilson’s absence this season, scoring 21 goals in 34 games in all competitions – including seven in his last six Premier League outings.

The England international will have just 12 months left to run on his contract in June.

He has managed just 22 appearances across all competitions this term, starting in 11 of those outings and scoring eight goals in total.

The ex-Bournemouth star has suffered chest, calf and hamstring injuries so far in the 2023-24 campaign.

Wilson joined the Magpies in 2020 and has gone on to score 46 goals in 104 appearances across all competitions for the club.
