Newcastle United make move to grow ‘power and influence’ after source’s update – expert

Newcastle United took the first step in their long-term strategy by applying for Ordinary Member status in the European Club Association.

That is the view of finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the benefits Newcastle will gain should they be handed a place in the ECA.

Football Insider sources revealed last Wednesday (4 January) that Newcastle United plan to begin the application process for Ordinary Member status in the ECA should they qualify for the Champions League this season.

The membership status of clubs in the ECA – which consists of 245 European clubs – is considered every four years, with the latest cycle coming to an end at the close of the 2022/23 season.

Newcastle are currently considered an associated member of the organisation, but that doesn’t entitle the club to voting rights.

Plumley believes Newcastle are looking to build power and influence on the European stage, with this application process one of the first steps in their long-term plan.

Absolutely that is where they want to be and it’s the long-term plan and strategy of the club,” Plumley told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

Having as much power and influence at the top end of that table is what the club wants and that’s always how it was going to go.

Obviously, if Newcastle does get a seat and a voice then it allows them to have negotiations and a say on the running of the Champions League and it’s also beneficial in terms of significant financial boosts as well.

So it’s no surprise to see that’s the way Newcastle are heading.
