Newcastle United news: Campbell issues ‘unbelievable’ Kieran Trippier claim ahead of announcement

Kevin Campbell has claimed Newcastle United star Kieran Trippier is “the first choice right-back” for England heading in the World Cup.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said the 32-year-old “has been unbelievable” for the Magpies this season.

Trippier grabbed his fourth assist of the 2022-23 campaign on Sunday as Newcastle beat Southampton 4-1 at St. Mary’s.

The right-back is expected to represent England at the World Cup, with Gareth Southgate set to name his 26-man squad on Thursday.

Speaking to the BBC (6 November), Alan Shearer said Tripper “has to start” for England in their World Cup opener against Iran on 21 November.

Campbell is in full agreement with the Premier League’s top scorer.

“The big thing about Trippier is that he can play on either side of the defence,” he told Football Insider.

“That is going to be so important now that Ben Chilwell is out. Trippier has played well for England on either side.

“He has been unbelievable this season. He was outstanding again at the weekend. The interception and through ball for [Joe] Willock was sensational.

“Gareth Southgate is blessed to have somebody like Trippier to pick. Trippier is versatile, talented and experienced. England are lucky to have him.

“He is first choice right-back as far as I am concerned. Luke Shaw will be the first choice left-back.”
