Newcastle United news: Kieran Trippier has ‘big’ role to play after injury update in last 48 hours – pundit
Kieran Trippier’s presence in the Newcastle United dressing room is “really important” and will give the squad a “big” boost.
That is the view of ex-Man City and England defender Danny Mills, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Trippier’s role from the sidelines.
The England international was pictured once again with his teammates in the dressing room following Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday (5 March).
He did the same thing last weekend after their 2-0 win over Brentford down in west London.
Trippier underwent surgery on a fractured foot last month and Eddie Howe revealed on Friday (4 March), via the Shields Gazette, he is making “good progress”.
“Sometimes players with a big influence, in and around the squad, talking to other players can still set the tone and the standards,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“That can be really important and really beneficial. Whoever has stepped into his shoes, playing in defence, playing at right-back, he can talk to them.
“It’s almost as if he’s saying ‘I’m still in this, we’re all in this together’. You get that camaraderie and that feeling.
“I think it’s really important. When you are down there and fighting you need that team spirit and that siege mentality of we’re all in this together.
“We talked about him being a future captain of the club, I think it’s a good thing for him to be doing.”

Trippier managed two goals in four Premier League games for Newcastle before his injury.
He moved to St. James’ Park from Atletico Madrid in January as the club’s first marquee signing under their new ownership.
