Newcastle United news: Pundit 'bemused' by Kieran Trippier development - 'I don't understand why?'
Paul Robinson is baffled by Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe’s decision to give Kieran Trippier a runout against Manchester City on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and England number one said “there was no need” to put the 31-year-old in against an in-form Pep Guardiola side on his return from injury.
The Magpies slipped to a 5-0 defeat at the Etihad on Sunday.
Trippier made his return from injury in the loss, replacing Emil Krafth shortly after the hour mark.
The right-back was exposed by Jack Grealish for City’s fourth goal, which was converted by Phil Foden.
A broken metatarsal has ruled Trippier out for the majority of 2022.

When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to Trippier’s return, Robinson said: “It’s great to see Trippier back.
“I’m sure he will be back to his best next season. He is an athlete and he is very fit but I don’t understand why he played at the weekend.
“Why was he brought on against a rampant City side when he’s coming back from a serious injury? Newcastle are safe. They are not in trouble.
“There was no need to rush him back and give him the few minutes that they did. Things like that bemuse me.”
Newcastle United signed Trippier from Atletico Madrid in January.
The full-back has scored twice in six appearances for Eddie Howe’s side.
