Pundit issues Newcastle United 'big signings' claim after Jonjo Shelvey latest

Frank McAvennie has claimed Jonjo Shelvey is an important member of the Newcastle United squad as the midfielder closes in on a contract extension.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League striker stressed the importance of keeping hold of players who know the club well.

Shelvey, 30, has entered the final 12 months of his contract at St. James’ Park.

However, as reported by the Shields Gazette, the centre-midfielder triggered a 12-month extension clause in his agreement when he featured against Southampton on Sunday (6 November).

Shelvey made his 200th appearance for the Tyneside club at St. Mary’s.

The extension will reportedly be worth around £3million.

When asked by Football Insider if Shelvey has a future at St. James’ Park beyond this season, McAvennie said: “Shelvey has done well under [Eddie] Howe.

“He has stepped up.

“It is really important to keep hold of players that have been there for years. Shelvey knows the club inside out.

“Players will come and go. They have the money now to make big signings but it is important you keep the core of the squad there.

“They are doing it the right way at the moment. I did not think they would turn it around this quick. I take my hat off to them.”

Shelvey has been a bit-part player this season because of a hamstring injury and has featured exclusively as a substitute.

The midfielder joined the Magpies from Swansea in January 2016.

In other news, a source has revealed Newcastle United are set to listen to offers for big name in January amid £10m reveal.
