Newcastle United news: Pundit issues emphatic Matt Targett prediction after fee agreed

Kevin Phillips has tipped Matt Targett to be first-choice left-back for Newcastle United for many years to come.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Sunderland hero and England striker delivered his verdict after it was reported Newcastle have the option to turn the 26-year-old’s loan deal into a permanent move.

Chronicle Live reported last Tuesday (8 March) the Magpies have agreed a £15million fee with Aston Villa for Targett.

The left-back moved to St. James’ Park on a temporary deal in January after Villa signed Lucas Digne from Everton.

He has become an integral part of Eddie Howe’s rejuvenated side with six Premier League appearances under his belt for his new club.

Asked whether Targett is good enough to be part of the club’s long-term project, Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ewan Kingsbury: “I do.

“They have to be careful and not go out and buy a player for every position. I think you still need those British players in there who know the Premier League.

“When you look at Newcastle’s team now they have got that blend in there who know the Premier League and know what it takes.

“Matt Targett, he can count himself unlucky, he got player of the season at Villa and then they let him go.

“We know he’s a good player and he just needs a run of games which is what he’s getting at Newcastle.

“I can see him playing in that position for Newcastle for a long while.”

Targett is under contract at Villa Park until the summer of 2025.

The Englishman played 89 times for the Midlands giants, including 83 appearances in the Premier League.
