Newcastle United owners expected to strike off-field deal soon – Stefan Borson

Newcastle United’s owners are expected to buy a new club within the next year as they look to set up a worldwide multi-club network.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) would receive a “very welcome audience” if they enquired about some of the clubs in France.

PIF purchased Newcastle in 2021 and also own four clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

Football Insider revealed in June top-ranking chiefs had jetted out to Brazil to sound out potential takeover opportunities, while it is believed PIF are also eager to acquire additional European clubs to bolster their network.

GiveMeSport reported on 1 August PIF have held talks over deals for French club Red Star and Belgian side Standard Liege, who are both owned by former Everton prospective owner 777 Partners.

Newcastle United owners could explore opportunities in France

But Borson insisted Newcastle’s owners don’t need to look too closely at 777’s assets as there are plenty of opportunities available elsewhere.

“I would think most of the clubs will try and move to a multi-club model,” Borson told Football Insider.

“They all seem to believe that the City approach has worked well and they will try and replicate it.

“But I wouldn’t think PIF need to look too closely at the 777 assets.

“There is distress with 777, but the reality is, you could probably pick up the phone to most of the French league that are not currently owned by multi-club owners and get a very welcome audience because French football is in particular distress.

“You could also do it elsewhere in other countries.

“I would expect them if they have the appetite in the next year to buy something because now is a good time to buy these assets.

“There just isn’t much money around.”
