Newcastle United player ratings v Everton – Bruno Guimaraes dazzles but 1/10 is embarrassing

Newcastle United missed a superb chance to climb the league table as they were held by struggling Everton.

The two clubs played out a 1-1 stalemate in their Premier League meeting under the lights at St James’ Park on Tuesday (1 April).

Alexander Isak gave the hosts an early lead, but the Toffees left with a point after a late penalty from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

PLAYER RATINGS

Martin Dubravka [6]

Dubravka will be furious after missing out on a clean sheet at St James’, but the goalkeeper can be proud of his display between the sticks, with Dubravka making two saves and one high claim [Sofascore].

Emil Krafth [3]

The defender had a tough time on what was a very rare start given the injuries to Kieran Trippier and Tino Livramento, with Krafth winning just three of his six aerial duels.

Fabian Schar [6]

The centre-back was kept busy by a hungry Everton attack, with the defender carrying out his duties at the back professionally until the Toffees finally broke the deadlock very late on.

Dan Burn [6]

Burn did well in his individual battles, with the towering defender heavily involved at the back, while he wasn’t allowed to get forward as much he would have liked given his role in central defence.

Newcastle

Lewis Hall [6]

A strong showing from the left-back, who showed his resilience by battling through injury before finally being withdrawn with just over 10 minutes left.

Sean Longstaff [5]

A tricky evening for the midfielder, who was often overpowered by the physical Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye in the middle of the pitch.

Bruno Guimaraes [8]

A standout display in midfield from the Brazilian ace, who often carried his team in a tireless display at both ends of the pitch, with Guimaraes winning six tackles and registering two key passes.

Newcastle

Elliot Anderson [5]

Like midfield partner Longstaff, Anderson was tasked with keeping the likes of Onana and Gueye out of possession, but he didn’t always manage to succeed in that challenge.

Jacob Murphy [4]

A disappointing evening for the winger, who was kept very quiet by a resolute Everton defence, with Murphy winning just three of his nine duels.

Alexander Isak [7]

Isak was his usual sharp self from the very first whistle, with the Swedish ace undoubtedly his side’s biggest threat all match, with the striker taking his goal expertly.

Harvey Barnes [7]

Barnes was unsurprisingly handed a start at St James’ Park following his outstanding substitute appearance against West Ham, and while he couldn’t find the back of the net once more, the winger did get the all-important assist for Isak’s goal.

SUBSTITUTES

Joe Willock [3]

The attacker failed to make the impact Eddie Howe would have wanted, with Willock not seeing much of the ball given the late assault from the Toffees.

Paul Dummett [1]

A simply disastrous cameo from the rarely-seen defender, who needlessly pulled down Ashley Young to give away a late penalty, which Calvert-Lewin dispatched.
