Newcastle United player ratings vs West Ham – Harvey Barnes is breathtakingly good but 2/10 is embarrassing
Newcastle United left it late to steal all three points in their dramatic 4-3 victory over West Ham on Saturday afternoon (30 March).
The Magpies overcame a number of injury setbacks at St James’ Park to revive their hopes of qualifying for European football next season.
Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes both scored twice to cancel out goals from Michail Antonio, Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen.
PLAYER RATINGS
Martin Dubravka [3]

Could – and should – have done better for all three goals. Particularly poor for Bowen’s goal minutes after the break. Newcastle fans will be counting the days until Nick Pope returns.
Tino Livramento [6]
A promising display from the youngster in an uncomfortable left-back role. However, he was made to pay by an in-form Jarrod Bowen when he was caught out of position.
Jamaal Lascelles [4]
Around 50,000 groans could be heard around St James’ Park when he went down holding his knee. Lascelles had started brightly but lasted only 15 minutes before becoming the latest name to join Newcastle’s nightmarish injury list.
Fabian Schar [2]

Embarrassing. Newcastle needed their only remaining fit centre-back to take authority after Lascelles’ injury but Schar crumbled defensively and his appeals for a free-kick before Mohammed Kudus’ goal were shameful.
Dan Burn [4]
Started on the left but forced to cover centrally after Lascelles’ injury. Burn was typically dominant in the air but his sluggish reactions and lack of pace meant Newcastle had to drop deeper than they would have wanted.
Sean Longstaff [4]
A passenger in midfield. Failed to make an impact in either box and missed a golden opportunity to score in the second half. Lewis Miley will be a huge miss for the Magpies and Longstaff showed exactly why.
Bruno Guimaraes [7]

A combative performance from the fiesty Brazilian. Against a physical West Ham side, Guimaraes did not shirk a challenge and he took it upon himself to make sure compatriot Lucas Paqueta was kept quiet.
Joe Willock [6]
Lively in midfield and consistently looked to pass forward, but his final ball lacked quality. Struggled to break down a well-organised West Ham defence.
Jacob Murphy [3]
Anonymous. Started slowly and struggled to make an impact from the right flank. Newcastle looked far more dangerous when they found Gordon on the left.
Alexander Isak [8]
Added to his goal tally with two superbly-taken penalties. Started brightly and was a constant threat even during periods where Newcastle struggled. He turned provider with a superb pass to Harvey Barnes for the equaliser.
Anthony Gordon [8]

Riding the high of his first England cap, Gordon’s display was bursting with confidence and jubilance. His direct running and relentless press was a handful for the Hammers backline and his efforts earned his side two penalties. A bizarre red card in the final minutes were not enough to stain a brilliant performance.
SUBSTITUTES
Emil Krafth [3] – Completely lacked coordination after replacing Lascelles. Newcastle needed the Swede to rise to the ocassion but he immediately looked out of place and was punished by an electric Mohammed Kudus. Taken off in the second half despite coming on as a substitute.
Lewis Hall [7] – A shining light in an otherwise dull display. Looked threatening down the left and deserves a place in the starting lineup.
Miguel Almiron [4] – Added some much needed energy when brought on but failed to last the match and was taken off with 20 minutes remaining.
Elliot Anderson [6] – Helped Newcastle regain control of the match with a strong showing in midfield.
Harvey Barnes [9] – A masterclass from the substitute. Barnes entered the pitch after Newcastle were ravaged by injuries and he led his side to a remarkable win with two superbly taken goals. The second was breathtakingly good.
