Newcastle United players fuming at ‘ludicrous’ club move – Kieran Maguire

It is clear that Newcastle United players are unhappy with the “ludicrous” decision to tour Australia just days after the end of the Premier League season.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle will only earn around £1.5million from their post-season trip.

Newcastle staff and players jetted off to Australia just hours after their 4-2 win over Brentford on the final day of the Premier League season.

The Tyneside club have played matches against Tottenham and the A-League All Stars in Melbourne this week, with Eddie Howe’s side ending the tour with an 8-0 defeat on Friday (24 May).

The controversial trip has faced criticism with players forced to make the 9,000-mile trip so soon after the end of the season.

Newcastle United Australia trip slammed as ‘ludicrous’

Maguire explained that the trip will not be lucrative for Newcastle so it appears to be a “strange” decision by the club.

It’s clear from comments from professionals such as Kieran Trippier that the attitude of the players towards the trip is that it is ludicrous,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

They have only got a few days of recovery between the end of the season and the start of the Euros campaign.

Ultimately, it will not be worth tens of millions to the club – they’d do well to get £1.5million for the trip.

Newcastle

It’s difficult to see how this is worth it for either Tottenham or Newcastle after they had decent seasons.

I expect overall it is worth less to the clubs than finishing one position higher in the Premier League – so it is a very strange decision.
