Newcastle United playing ‘dangerous’ game in transfer market after source’s reveal – pundit

Newcastle United are in danger of angering clubs with their low-ball bids for players, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the club are clearly “conscious” of financial fair play this summer.

The Magpies have seen bids for Jack Harrison and James Maddison rejected by Leeds United and Leicester City this month.

Sources told Football Insider (4 August) that the Foxes have told Newcastle Maddison is not for sale in this window.

However, according to inews‘ Mark Douglas (4 August), Eddie Howe’s side are considering a third bid for the attacking midfielder this month.

When asked by Football Insider if Newcastle’s approach in the market may be angering clubs, Robinson said: “There is a danger of that.

“At the same time, you can understand that they are conscious of staying within the financial fair play line.

“They have got a huge squad of players, some of which they cannot get out of the door. Newcastle do not want to hoard players when they do not have room in the squad. It is a balancing act for them.

“Everyone knows they have incredible wealth. The thing is, they do not want to be held to ransom over fees. If they overpay for players they will get to that financial fair play line quicker.

“You do not want to be spending £70million on a £40million player. It does not take a genius to work out that it would not be good business. It would hit them where it hurts.”
