Newcastle United points deduction will trigger exodus of stars in ‘crazy’ twist – pundit

Newcastle United stars who recently moved to the club will have doubts over the club’s future success if the Magpies are charged with FFP breaches.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed that the recent recruits will be questioning the direction of the club amid fears they may have to cash in to navigate FFP rules.

Everton and Nottingham Forest have already been charged with such breaches, with the former docked six points and the latter docked four points this season.

Newcastle are currently chasing a European spot, with Eddie Howe’s side sitting eighth in the Premier League table.

McAvennie believes that such FFP rules may not be in place in the near future, which would be a relief for the Magpies given their ambitions.

Newcastle United stars will question FFP situation

“From what I hear, they are going to get rid of it, I’ve been told it’s not working,” he told Football Insider.

“How can the richest club in the world not be able to spend more than somebody else? It’s crazy. It’s baffling. Why can’t you go out and spend?

“Everyone moans about wanting to get a billionaire in, and then when he’s in, he can’t spend any money. That’s just stupid, I don’t understand it.

“I’m not interested in the mechanics of it, it’s just crazy. It beggars belief. Why would you have to sell one of your top players?

“The people came into Newcastle to build a team, the same as Man City did, and to win the league, and that’s what they did.

“And now all of a sudden the richest club has to sell people. I think it will change this year, so if that changes, they won’t have to sell anyone.

“I feel sorry for Newcastle if they have to sell players, because I don’t think they will win the league if they aren’t able to spend the owner’s money.

“I think they’ve got a great squad and great team spirit, but you’ve got to go to the next level. I think they’ve stalled a bit.

“I know there are injuries, but they’ve not kicked on, and it must be hard for them now thinking they have to sell one of their top players.

“And the players that have gone there to win the league might say ‘Hold on a minute, why is this happening?’

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

“It’s stupid that the richest club in the world can’t spend as much as a Man United or Man City or whoever, it’s crazy.”
