Newcastle United refuse to hand Mark Gillespie a contract extension – sources

Mark Gillespie is not set to land a new contract with Newcastle United this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 31-year-old is out of contract in June after penning a one-year deal last summer (2023).

Gillespie, who is a boyhood Newcastle fan, has been a backup shot-stopper for the Magpies since he arrived from Motherwell in 2020.

It is believed he won’t be offered a new deal at the club as Eddie Howe and his transfer chiefs look to raise funds and clear space for new signings this summer.

Gillespie has made just three senior appearances for Newcastle, all of which came in the League Cup during the 2020-21 season.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (12 March) that fellow Magpies fringe goalkeeper Loris Karius is also not set to land a new contract at the club.

It is believed the Tyneside club are ready to move for a new backup shot-stopper in the upcoming off-season.

Nick Pope is the first-choice goalkeeper for Newcastle but has been out with a dislocated shoulder since December.

Martin Dubravka, who is under contract until 2025, has stepped in for the England international in recent weeks.
