Finance guru salutes 'innovative' Newcastle United as multiple Brazilian signings on the cards

Newcastle United are smart to capitalise on post-Brexit opportunities by expanding their network in Brazil.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ expanding presence in the region.

Newcastle already have two Brazilian stars on the books in Bruno Guimaraes, 24, and Joelinton, 26.

The i reported last Friday (9 September) that chief scout Steve Nickson is now concentrating squarely on the Brazilian market.

The Magpies are also understood to be using their relationship with Guimaraes’ agent, Giuliano Bertolucci, to further explore the country’s huge cache of talent.

Vasco de Gama midfielder Andrey Santos, 18, is claimed to be one possible target.

Plumley saluted the Tynesiders for aiming their attentions on Brazil as post-Brexit regulations make it easier to recruit players from the region.

“I think this is a strategic play by the club,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“Newcastle are setting their stall out. We have seen a few transfers that have been scuppered by Brexit in the last few years, so you have to look elsewhere sometimes, innovate and reinvent.

“It was an attractive market even before Brexit but it’s smart to add another layer to your strategy.

“If we look at the bigger picture, multi-club ownership is growing increasingly popular. If you join the dots up, that can be big. It’s important to look at that side of things as well.”
