Newcastle United set sights on Marc Guehi alternative – sources

Newcastle United have compiled a shortlist of centre-back targets despite pushing ahead with their Marc Guehi pursuit, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (26 August) that the Magpies remain “confident” of landing the Crystal Palace star.

Palace are holding out for £70million and Newcastle are not far away from meeting that valuation late on in the summer window.

But with time ticking down until the 30 August deadline, Eddie Howe and his transfer team are also exploring moves for other targets on their shortlist.

Sources say a new centre-back will arrive at St James’ Park before the window slams shut, even if a move for Guehi can’t be completed.

Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba has been a long-term target for Newcastle but sources have told Football Insider that it will be a difficult deal for the Tynesiders to pull off.

Leverkusen are on the brink of selling Odilon Kossounou to Atalanta and are therefore reluctant to lose the Burkina Faso international.

Tapsoba is under contract until June 2028 after signing a new deal 12 months ago.

Newcastle

Newcastle lined up with Dan Burn and Emil Krafth at the heart of their defence during the 1-1 draw against Bournemouth on Sunday (25 August).

Fabian Schar is suspended while Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are both injured.
